The Chickpea is a member of the legume family—a category of crops, such as peas, beans, and lentils, that are classified into grains, legumes, and seeds. Chickpeas are commonly used in savory and sweet foods, including guacamole, mashed potatoes, and prepared rice. They are low in calories and high in protein, fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Chickpeas are high in thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorus, and potassium, making them especially beneficial for women, young children, and older people. The chickpea, also known as raffa dahl, is fast becoming the future superfood of the midwest.
Chickpeas are easy to grow. Your local farmer may be glad to have you visit them about planting.
